Coyle – The Munny Project

 Coyle’s Monkey Munnys

“The inspiration for the Munnys was that the object itself is a blank canvas, and I saw a huge disconnect between that canvas and the pipe art world: It would be hard for someone to paint their glass ‘steeze’ on a vinyl Munny. It just wouldn’t look the same. It needed to be made of glass.”

Coyle’s Munny Project is one of the most diverse collections out there today, and in this personal interview he tells us that it’s only going to continue growing as a vehicle for collaborative artistic expression. We were curious about the whole thing and how it started, which he explains:

“I knew that they looked cool but I had no idea how hyped they would become. The first Munny I made was a clear dry piece. My buddy Sam had let me borrow one of his vinyl toys and I made a glass toy that looked just like it. When I showed him the finished piece he told me about the Munny and the do-it-yourself nature of the form: There are people out there making beautiful vinyl toys, posting pictures of them, buying, selling, and trading them. I observed the similarities of that to the pipe art world, and I also noticed that a lot of graffiti writers make toys too. I though that if I could bring this blank canvas to the glass world then our genres might share something in common.”

Coyle gives credit to other artists who helped pioneer the idea glass Munnys:

“I should say that I found out later that Byron Beres had made Munnys before me, and that Devin Somerville had made Dunnys too… Much Respect.”

We asked if there were any particular favorites or if he loved all of his children the same:

There are too many good ones to play favorites. I love all of them and I hope that they all go to a good home!”

On a final note, Coyle relates to something once said by the man who popularized the idea of Munnys:

When I first started Kidrobot it was really hard to explain to people what I was doing. People would ask, ‘Are they art or are they toys?’ and I’d say, ‘Both, and selling them is part of the artwork too.’ – Kid Robot founder Paul Budnitz

“I see a huge parallel to the pipe art world in that statement; ‘Are they art or are they pipes?’ Making an art toy into a pipe adds another dimension to that question; ‘Are they art, are they toys, or are they pipes?’ If toys are already accepted as art will making them functional take away something? Will it make them not “Art” worthy? I think not. As an artist who makes pipes I walk the line legally, I risk my freedom in order to express myself. I choose to make pipes because pipes have long been sacred objects, objects that bring people together, objects that bring peace. And to ignore such a powerful object would just not be right.”

    Fantastic art.
May one buy one of these pieces?

    • The Glass Otaku says:

Yes surely, just contact your local smoke shop. If they support American Glass and know about their products they should be able to get ahold of one for you.
