It’s true what they say about German glass. The Magic Squidder Evolution 7.0 (also available in 5.0) is built like a brick house, standing at 21.6 inches tall and walled in with 7mm thick German boro. Beyond being a powerhouse of a pipe, it has some innovative design elements that give it unique advantages over other tubes.
A rubber ring sits just below the rim of the mouthpiece to act as a line of defense against shattering. You probably wouldn’t think that a tiny rubber ring could break the fall of a 21” tall pipe, but it actually makes all the difference. They told us that this tube would be particularly strong, which we found to be an understatement upon testing it. It’s actually sort of ridiculous how unbreakable these tubes are. We tipped it over on a hard surface to see the damage: none. Then we shoved and slammed it onto a hard surface: still no damage. Then we dropkicked this freaking pipe, sending it flying across the floor, only to find that there was still no damage. It’s like the hammer of Thor or something.
In the bottom of the shaft sits Magic’s Squid percolator, which is conveniently fixed to an 18ml joint that attaches to a thick female end at the bottom of the tube. The squid perc can be lifted out of the pipe with the included metal rod, which avoids the annoying task of cleaning out the densely clogged intricacies of a tiny dynamic perc inside of a glass cannon. The removable perc is one of the reasons that this tube has practically no weak spots. Even if something were to shake the pipe and break the somewhat delicate perc inside, that perc is easily taken out and replaced. Though I must say it would be awesome to see a variety of replacement percs available in their online store.
Another particularly beautiful part of this piece is of course the dot-diffused downstem, securely sitting in the absurdly thick joint angled into the beaker. It would take some pretty rough pipe trauma to break these beefy joints. Too many pieces have had their necks broken by a protruding downstem slamming into an unforgiving coffee table, or someone’s leg, or whatever else downstems and slides like to break themselves against.
Overall, we’ve found that this is one of the most durable and powerful tubes out there. It’s clear that Magic glass took the time to compensate for the demands of a daily driver for smoking, and all the stumbles that may come with that. We absolutely recommend this piece for one’s smoking needs, and we give two thumbs up to the Magic glass company as a whole. We hope they keep the good work and continue to bring some new designs and styles to the table.
