Mr. Xtra Crispy – Sherlock Genesis

Last night we were invited by our good friend Jasen Despres aka Mr. Xtra Crispy to come down to work our first night shift of the summer. With a shop mate away and the summer heat setting in Jasen has changed to a more nocturnal schedule, leaving him all alone in the shop. So we had to come give him some good company while we melted stuff!

Before we began he had expressed the desire to create something “free” meaning that unlike most of his other work that has been spoken for this piece would have no per-destined buyer. So we decided to stray away from the usual vapor bubblers and rigs to something more classic… something Mr. Holmes himself would proud of.

The best part about this process was the amount of involvement we were allowed to have during the creative process, we picked Mystery Adventurine  as our primary color wich would be featured on the front section of the Sherlock just before the bowl. Jasen then experimented with some new techniques and created some interesting “IncaRoc” patterns in the mystery adventurine. He then picked black as his secondary color, and the Sherlock started to come together.

Once we got the basic form and shape together and welded we then started thinking embellishments, since this was to be a “free sherlock” crispy took the opporitunity to think outside the bun with it. So he adorned the pipe in horns and then started working on a reticello disc for the side. Watching him do the “disc-flip” technique was amazing, he first began by meticulously applying stringers (very very thin rods of glass) to a tube of glass, then proceeded to blow it out leaving only the pattern he had made. Then after some manicuring and “flipping” the pattern had been reversed and made into a “shield” of sorts. He then took the time to make it “abstract” with some horn embellishments. He then finished the whole thing up with a home made “fuck you” cluster millie on side.

We had a great time as always working with Jasen and since we got to do something a little out of the ordinary it was even more fun and exciting! This piece will be availible today for sale, please contact Mr. Xtra Crispy via his Official Facebook Page for details.
